Born in Pasadena, California, Dwight Stone grew up in Montana, graduating from Hellgate High School in Missoula in 1969.
Degrees include the Diplôme de Licence-ès-Lettres (B.A., 1973) in French literature at l'Université de Grenoble, France; Bachelor of Music, Voice (1981) and Master of Arts in Composition (1986) at California State University, Sacramento (CSUS). In 1987 Stone was awarded the Certificate of Advanced Studies in Film Music from the University of Southern California (USC-LA).
Dwight Stone lived from 1986 to 2006 in Los Angeles where he worked as composer, conductor, arranger, pianist and singer. In I987 Stone founded Pegasus Pacific Music, a platform for his own compositions as well as the works of other contemporary American composers. Pegasus Digital Music & FX was formed simultaneously to produce music for film, television and commercials.
In 1995-96 Stone wrote music for dressage (Kür) for Dressage-by-the-Sea in Santa Barbara, CA, and founded Pegasus Freestyle Music for dressage music. He was engaged by the renowned rider Charlotte Bredahl to formulate a piece for her ride at the Olympics in Atlanta, GA, 1996.
Stone's academic works encompass to date pieces for Choir (circa 80), brass (trumpet, trombone, tuba), and piano (4 books, book 5 in progress - over 50 pieces), flute, solo voice, orchestra and symphonic band. CDs (Catalog) feature solo piano "The Light", trumpet and pianoforte "Export/Import" and chromatic harmonica and pianoforte "Reveries for Day and Night".
From 2006 until 2010 Stone lived principally in Hartberg, Austria as he married his long-time friend from his student years, Margrit Stone (née Simmler). After their separation (Jan. 2010) Dwight Stone lived in Graz through July, 2010.
Stone now lives Walnut Creek, California, where he dedicates his time to composing, performing, and recording. He draws inspiration from nature, current events, life experience, and from other composers wuch as his favorites Morten Lauridsen, Pat Metheny, Aaron Copland, Paul Hindemith, Frédéric Chopin and Johann Sebastian Bach.
